The product range in the field of nuclear power plants covers low and high voltage engines (400 V to 15.000 V) of a performance range starting from 37 kW up to 35.000 kW as well as synchronous generators up to 15.000 V with a performance range up to 65.000 kVA.

ELIN Motoren can provide both non-safety-classified and safety-classified machines in all configurations. Applications for accident conditions (e.g. steam release such as LOCA, ANLE), earthquakes, or downgraded ambient conditions (e.g. radiation release) are qualified in accordance with regulatory requirements through calculation and/or testing, and are individually adapted and executed to meet the specific requirements of the applicable regulations and reactor type.

Existing qualifications for operation under elevated temperatures, high humidity, steam release, or exposure to radiation enable the qualification of new applications without time-consuming tests. Requirements for operation in the event of an earthquake are demonstrated using analytical methods.

Machines for normal power plant operation as well as for accident conditions:

  • Drives for primary water pumps / main coolant pumps
  • Feedwater pumps, condensate pumps, startup feedwater pumps
  • Main and auxiliary cooling water pumps
  • Motor/generator sets
  • Auxiliary drives in the nuclear and conventional islands (condenser vacuum pumps, pumps for closed cooling water circuits, auxiliary pumps in the feedwater and condensate systems, bus duct fans, HVAC fans, turbine gear motors)
  • Safety-related drives such as containment heat removal pumps, safety injection pumps, boric injection pumps, and emergency diesel generators

Our expertise in nuclear power plant technology:

  • Custom adaptation of machine designs to meet specific requirements
  • Extensive knowledge of nuclear power plant codes and standards worldwide
  • In-depth expertise in analytical and qualification methods
  • Comprehensive knowledge of and compliance with documentation requirements
  • Highest standards in welding and coating execution
  • Existing qualifications for accident conditions (LOCA, ANLE, irradiation)
  • Adaptation to existing interfaces and restoration of previous qualifications (retrofit and replacement machines)

Generators and motors for SMR applications in the AI era

Reliable Energy for the Digital Future

The rapid spread of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is driving global electricity demand sharply upward. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), data centers for AI applications already require power in the gigawatt range — and demand continues to rise. Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) offer a stable, scalable, and carbon-free energy source that operates reliably even under extreme conditions.

Advantages of SMRs for Modern Energy Applications

SMRs are compact nuclear power plants with an electrical output of up to 300 MW per module. They are factory-fabricated, assembled on-site, and can be commissioned step by step.

Technical Advantages:

  • Compact design and low space requirements

  • Modular operation for flexible load adjustment

  • Passive safety systems utilizing natural cooling mechanisms

  • Suitable for off-grid locations and integration with renewable energy sources

Nuclear Qualification – The Complete Portfolio

Our entire range of machines — motors and generators — can be qualified for nuclear applications.

Qualification Scope:

  • Extreme temperatures, humidity, and steam atmosphere

  • Seismic qualification for earthquake resistance

  • Accident conditions such as LOCA (Loss of Coolant Accident) and ANLE (Annulus Leak)

  • Radiation resistance (irradiation) over the entire service life

  • Safety-classified machines for critical applications

Standards & Regulations:
KTA 1401, RCC-E, NSQ, NQA-1, ISO 19443, 10 CFR 50 App. B, 10 CFR 21

Application in SMR Plants

Generators: Synchronous designs up to 65 MVA, voltages up to 15 kV
Motors: For all nuclear auxiliary and process applications under all environmental and accident conditions, starting from 37 kW for low- and high-voltage systems

E-Pack DS: Compact Drive and Generator Unit

Developed in collaboration with Voith, the E-Pack DS combines an electric machine and an integrated gearbox into a highly compact, synchronized system.

Features:

  • Power output up to 40 MW

  • Integrated gearbox for a compact design and reduced footprint

  • Pre-assembled for fast installation

  • High efficiency and low maintenance requirements

This design saves space, reduces interfaces, and simplifies integration into modular power plant layouts — ideal for SMR facilities with limited installation space.
